Local Wittenberg Area Businesses
The Wittenberg Area has more than 50 businesses which range in size from 1-175 employees. The largest employers in Wittenberg are:
Nueske's Applewood Smoked Meats
Founded in 1933 by R.C. Nueske, Nueske's Applewood Smoked Meats remains located in the village of Wittenberg and continues to be owned and operated by the Nueske family, now in its third generation of business and employs 134 employees. Nueske's Applewood Smoked Specialties are well-known for their sweet, rich smokiness and consistently high quality. Slabs of Nueske's famous bacon are hand-trimmed and smoked over applewood logs for a minimum of 24 hours, allowing the Nueske's signature smoky flavor to develop. Nueske's has received six gold medals, at the national level, from the Specialty Food Association (formerly the N.A.S.F.T.) for excellence in taste and quality. Nueske's has been mentioned in almost 100 books and cookbooks in the past decade and full articles on the company have been featured in The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune. Nueske's Applewood Smoked Meats are available across the U.S. for personal use by mail order at www.nueskes.com and for foodservice and retail use through their distributors. The Nueske's Company Store is also located in Wittenberg and the original smokehouse still stands to the west of the store entrance, along with other well-kept period buildings. In Wittenberg, on days when the wind is right, you can smell the sweet, fragrant applewood smoke pouring out of the smokehouse when you pull into the lot.
